Mahdia, Tunisia

Ok, I am trying to get everyone caught up on where we've been. We are now in Sousse, but before we got here we went to Mahdia.

Ah, Mahdia. Ok, if this blog encourages anyone to come to Tunisia, Mahdia should be in the top 2 or 3 places to see. It is a small peninsula, less than a km wide, and maybe 2 kilometers long that was established by the Fatimids (who from here moved on to establish Cairo as their capital). It is a peninsula that is an old Arab Medina, with views and coffee shops to rival any other Mediterranean cool town.

For some reason I kept thinking of Misho here. Misho, I think you could retire here. There is a cafe on the rocks facing the sea. Great views, beautiful music...just have to experience it. There are squares in the middle of the medina, with leafy cool seating areas to have a tea or coffee. Just relaxing and beautiful.

The beaches here are gorgeous. The water is so clear you can see pebbles in 4 feet of water clearly!! It was so nice. Beach during the noon hours, walking and relxaing in the evenings.

I got to see a wedding procession! The man is decked out in classical Tunisian garb, looking sharp. He is surrounded by all his male friends. They gather in the main square, and have sufi musicians play drums, flute and sing these entrancing songs. Then the whole entourage goes together with him to the woman's family house to pick her up. There she waits with her family and friends. It was so beautiful and mesmerizing.

We stayed at a family run pension. The hotel owners invited us to have lunch with them one. Once again, such nice people.

Ok, i will update on Sousse another time. Please leave comments. We miss everyone, and want to get some feedback.

Much love,

Is Tunsia the country your staying in the longest? Where are you headed next? Sounds like a great time.

Were all still pretty consumed by the New Orleans and Biloxi disaster. I hate to break it to you bro, but rumors are that Benson may move the Saints to San Antonio permenantly. They still don't know if there going to play therir home games their or at Tiger Stadium. If moves the Saints, it will be like a slap in the face to the state.

The diaster has brought out the best and worse of people, but the 'best' portion is what's evident now. They are calling it the worst natural disater is U.S. history, if not the top 5 in the world. They think 10,000 are dead in New Orleans. it's been 9 days and they just got the pumps running.

The Bush adminstration is doing damage control, the whole country seems united in resentment tomwards FEMA. To much to mention here.

Can't wait for you guys to get back, although things are so expensive now, especially gas 3.19 a gallon, don't know how were going to come see you guys. Sage is doing well, they removed the I.V. from his arm yesterday, and he is happy to be able to crawl once again. he is the joy of my life, and is the happiest baby I've ever seen.

Stay Safe. Saints Suck.

Hi Sam. From yr narration every small town, village and hamlet in Tunisia appears to be a mini paradise. I think, it is not only the natural beauty of the place but more so the generous and caring disposition of the people that makes it so. It will be wonderful memories you three will be carrying with you all your lives. Cherish it.

Love

Dad
